Intervalic Lines, Part 2

Hello everyone! Happy holidays! A while back in a previous lesson I showed you some lines using intervals. I have had a great response from that lesson. In this lesson we will cover more intervallic lines. If you really want to add a fresh sound to your playing and break out of the rut of running up and down scales, you should really explore this area. OK, let's get started.

Example1 is based off a Gm9th arpeggio (G, Bb, D, F, A). It is constructed mainly from 3rd and 5th intervals. You can use this line to spice up your solos over a G minor chord progression. Also make sure you follow the fingerings for this one.

Example 2 is constructed from the Bb Lydian scale (Bb, C, D, E, F, G, A). It mainly uses 2nds, 4ths and 5th intervals. Record yourself playing a Bbmaj7th chord and play this line over it. You will hear that mysterious Lydian flavor. You also might want to try playing this over a Gm7th or a CDom7th chord.

Example 3 is made up of Major 6th intervals; it uses the same shape, just moved around the neck. The notes are based off a Dm11 chord (D, F, A, C, E, G).Try playing this line over a C9th or a Gm6th chord also.

Example 4 moves around the neck very quickly using mainly 5th intervals and is based off of the Am pentatonic scale (A, C, D, E, G). It is really important to follow the fingerings to play this line smoothly. Crank up the gain on your amp and apply this to a rock or blues progression in A.

MP3 - Example 4

I gave you just a few examples so you can see how you can spice up your lines with intervals. Transpose these lines in other keys. Make up your own examples and be sure to practice these lines slowly while gradually building up speed. There are many other chords related to these lines besides the ones I suggested, so experiment.
