Mahavishnu Orchestra
Apocalypse
The Story
"Apocalypse", part of the CBS Records' Contemporary Jazz Masters series, features the second, expanded Mahavishnu Orchestra fronting the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas. A bold attempt to integrate classical sonorities into McLaughlin's jazz-rock palette, "Apocalypse" echoes Third-Stream efforts of two decades earlier while losing none of the electric band's gritty edge and probing improvisational twists. It's a timeless classic.
