Tandem Flight is the captivating, impressively performed 1997 CD release by Aerial Acoustics, an acoustic guitar duo featuring Dorothy Wagner (on classical guitar) and Dennis Smith (steel-string guitar). Their original instrumental music is an eclectic blend of jazz, New Age, classical and folk, marked by an attention to dynamics, top notch musicianship and a blended tonal pallet accenting their respective guitars of choice. Tandem Flight is all original, save for a cover of Paul Desmond's "Take Five", which closes the disc. Notable is the Latinesque "Boxhead" and the chordally challenging "Mr. Moon", which prove that guitaristic talent and melodic accessibility can go hand in hand quite nicely. Highly recommended. Aerial Acoustics was originally profiled in the April-May, 2000 edition of The Undiscovered.
Dorothy Wagner earned a Master's degree in classical guitar from the Yale School of Music, where she studied with Ben Verdery, and is an active freelance musician throughout the New York metropolitan area. She has recorded for the Neuma label and has been featured in Guitar Player magazine. Dennis Smith has been an active member of several musical acts throughout New Jersey for 15 years. His energetic and virtuosic style incorporates many genres including rock, jazz and blues. He has performed at the Village Gate and numerous venues throughout the tri-state area.
This stellar duo continues to maintain an active live schedule in support of Tandem Flight, while writing and arranging new material. One can only hope a new CD is on the agenda as well!
