Other True Self
The Story
"Other True Self" "leads us back to the beginning" according to Vernon Reid. From his infancy in London to his upbringing in Brooklyn, NY and the controversy and adulation unleashed by Living Colour, it all leads into "Other True Self". Each track highlights one side or another of Vernon Reid, including his African lineage in "Prof. Bebey", while tracks such as "Flatbush And Church Revisited" and the Middle Eastern energies of "Mind Of My Mind", provide the diversity and the cultural blend. The chemistry of Masque has brought an energy that is focused more tightly than ever on "Other True Self". All members of Masque are a vital part of the creativity process. They all contribute compositionally to the album. Gruenbaum is the writer of "White Face", a heavy, wall-of-guitar rock in a slow 6/8, while McKenzie created "Kizzy", a slow-turning mobile of glittering sounds, and Schroy contributed the enigmatic and abstract "Oxossi". "Other True Self" is a sonic journey, with an abundance of astonishing visions and ideas, yet is just one step forward on a possibly endless, and endlessly rewarding mission.
