A look at the Guitar Nine organization's assortment of dirt and drive (distortion, overdrive, fuzz) pedals amassed from 1980 through 2025. It's been called the "Dope and Def 99", but that's a somewhat droll (or cheeky) way of saying overdrive, fuzz and distortion are guitar effects that alter the sound of a guitar signal, but they do so differently. Overdrive creates a warmer, more dynamic sound through soft clipping, while distortion (and/or fuzz) uses harder clipping to produce a harsher, more aggressive tone. Gritty, fuzzy, or ballsy - there's a drive or dirt pedal out there that can take your tone to a proper level of nastiness.
